Hails pelts the windows during the storm.
Cautiously excited, she prefers to sit on the window sill rather than venture outside for a closer look.

On My Worktable - Vest and Shoes

June 27, 2013

I've been quietly making woolen vests for quite some time now.
It started with a couple for our little girl, then a few for friends, followed by play-group playmates etc. It seems they are disappearing before they have the chance to make an appearance in my shop.

Garments like these make so much sense for me at this time of year.  Great for layering up, but still allowing lots of room for movement and play.

The little bumble bee vest is off to a little girl in Hawkes Bay and the dandelion one is for a special little someone in Auckland.
I hope they love them!

I have listed one ready-to-ship Poppy vest and one Dandelion vest in my shop this week.

Op Shop Finds - Embroideries

June 24, 2013

Botanical embroidered tablecloth.  Lucky for me the embroidered parts are still in pretty good nick, albeit with few holes and quite a few stains in the linen.

If there are enough "good bits", it will become a little spring cape, with the off cuts used for baby shoes.  The other option is some little doll dresses with the leftovers used for coat detailing.

The finished results could be a way off though - still working on winter coats at the moment.
I actually just cut out a garment from this blanket featured a wee while ago on my "op-shop finds"...

On My Worktable - Coats Capes & Vests

June 12, 2013

With winter upon us, snugly woolen garments are just the thing to keep little bodies and warm and toasty.
Feeling akin to an elf in my studio, busily sewing an assortment of capes, coats and vests for my little shop is my weekly ritual at this time of year.

You can read more about it here.

Matariki Crafting

June 11, 2013

Welcome to those of you who are here from the Matariki Crafting Blog Hop!  I would like to thank Juliet of Tartan Kiwi for a splendid job of gathering us all together for a spot of winter crafting.

On the weekend I got together with a girlfriend to cut, embellished and sewed a bunch of sweet covers for The Hottie Project - the sister event to Matariki Crafting.

Hopefully you have heard of The Hottie Project.  It is all about the crafting community coming together to create a BIG stack of lovely warm hottie covers to keep Christchurch children cosy and warm this winter.

Here's how you can help:
  • Create a hottie cover!  Sew, crochet, knit, embroider - whatever takes your fancy!  The key here is keeping children warm, so your hottie cover doesn't need to be super fancy, just lovely and cuddly and something you would love to keep your children warm.

  • If you need a free template/pattern please leave a comment here.   (Anonymous comments are welcome but it means I don't have your email address to send you the pattern, so please pop me an email me at thebiglittleshop@gmail.com as well :)

Here is a little selection of hottie covers received so far from some very kind and talented bloggers...

What better way to spend your evenings than to have a craft night and invite your friends round for some coffee, cake and crafting?   Details for The Hottie Project are here.  We are hoping to send the first parcel on June 21st so it's time to get crafting!  I can't wait for you to join us :)

A portrait of our little girl, once a week, every week in 2013

Beautiful "just-two year old" hair.

Some serious mummy bias here, but those long, luscious wavy locks just make me melt.
...and blonde, amongst a sea of dark hair in our family.

An Autumn Series - Needle Felted Acorn Tutorial

June 07, 2013

We took a trip to our local park and collected a bunch of treasures!  Our little girl loved foraging the little caps and together with her little friend they collected quite the stash.

What to do with them?  Make needle felted acorn of course!  Here is a little tutorial on how to make your own...

Start with collecting your acorn capes, then you will need a little un-spun wool in some natural colours (or bright colours if you fancy something a little more festive :)

Roll a little of the wool into an elongated ball and gently stab it (a bit of an oxymoron!) with a felting needle until the wool fibres bond together.  You will need to do this on a sponge.

Dab a little glue into the cap of the acorn, press your needle felted ball in and leave to dry.

String up!

Ours are strung across the twig tree on our nature table this year.
I just love them - soft and neutral and woodlandy - all my favourite things!

Our little girl has also "acquired" a few for her play kitchen.  It would seem that tea made from needle felted acorns is rather good :)

On My Worktable - Red Riding Hood Cape

June 04, 2013

I think Little Red Riding Hood would approve of this wee cape...
I think she would love the dandelion flowers.

I think she would love the floral lining.
I think she would love the pearly button.

I think she would really love the pixie hood.
I even think she would like the colour - even though it is slightly more pink than red :)

A portrait of our little girl, once a week, every week in 2013

The urgent request for "water pleese, water pleeeeese" came from the doorway.  I found someone with her fancy birthday dress over her everyday clothes had set up for a lovely tea party on the deck.

My favourite from last week was this happy kiddo.
