Woodland Baby Cape

September 07, 2010

Over the last few months I have been sourcing old garments from op shops (thrift stores) made from lovely soft warm New Zealand wool blends in order to make some hand embroidered baby capes ready for this weeks shop update.

I spend ages carefully unpicking the garments, hand washing and pressing them ready for re-crafting into these beautiful one of a kind pieces.

The initial sketches of "Mouse", who loves adventuring in the rain with his umbrella. He is heading home with his big gold key to his "Mouse House", a classic red and white toadstool where supper is waiting...

I used some hand crocheted lace to make the frill around the cap of the toadstool and hand embroidered the wildflowers in his garden. When stitching on the grass, I left the tops free to give it a little more texture.

Mouse and his umbrella were fashioned from felt and attached using lots and lots of tiny hand stitches. I used the same method for the raincloud, and used chain stitch to make the raindrops and the umbrella handle.

The cape fastens together with a beautiful red vintage button. The entire cape in lined in a red cotton. The hood is slightly elongated to give a super cute woodland pixie look.

I imagined the cape fitting between 6-24 months. You could use it almost like a cloak or blanket for a younger baby, and have it grow with them into a cape.

I am quietly proud of how this one turned out and can't wait to get started on the next one! Any ideas for the next design?

What talent. I am beginning to redesign vintage clothing. I wish I had artistic ability to hand create embriodery designs like you are able to do. Very nice work.
