Aye Me Hearties!

February 10, 2011

I have discovered that there are fun things to make for boys!  A custom request for a Pirate jacket saw me designing a very special garment for playing in which was both carefully crafted and built to last, but still with all the "essential" fun pirate elements for kids...

Wanting to stay true to my philosophy of using reclaimed and vintage fabrics,  I used up some gorgeous grey wool fabric found in a local second hand shop.

A skull and crossbones flag was given pride of place on the back, with a treasure bag hanging off the belt (yes, a real one so little hands can put their goodies in there) made from reclaimed suede from an old skirt.

I really enjoyed hand embroidering a wee treasure map complete with palm tree and an "X" to mark the spot, and creating a dagger tucked into the belt with a large gold buckle make from leftover felt pieces.

Although this jacket was made specially for a little boy in Texas, I will also be stocking it as a "make to order" item, available in four sizes from 12 months to 4 years in my Etsy shop.

I was delighted to find it featured in two treasuries already!  (You can check them out here and here).

It was enjoyable crafting for boys for a change - I would love to hear your ideas for other cute boys things!

  1. How about a dragon one? The hood could be the dragons head and there could be wings or spikes on the back. Or a knight - sheild on the back, dragon on one side and a sword on the other. :)

    Love it!
